Muay Thai
Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai boxing, was brought to
America from Thailand. Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and
its origins date back to ancient battlefield tactics and weapon arts.
It is quickly gaining notoriety in the USA for it's quickness and
devastating kicking system.
Muay Thai techniques consist of punches, kicks, elbows, knees and
standing grappling. This is a tough art in which one must be well
conditioned as well as skilled in it's techniques. Training methods
include shadowboxing, two man drills and sparring. Equipment such as
focus mitts and thaipads enable hard but relatively safe training.
Muay Thai, as taught at Wu Hsin Kuen Academy, comes from ajarn
Surachai Sirisute. Our Academy is a member of the Thai Boxing
Association of the U.S.A.
Ajarn Surachai "Chai" Sirisute
Surachai Sirisute, known to his students as "Ajarn Chai" (Ajarn means
head instructor), is the founder and President of the Thai Boxing
Association of the U.S.A. Sirisute began fighting in Muay Thai at the
age of 12 and fought over 72 matches. After he retired as a ring
fighter he came to the United States in 1968 to teach his art.
Nowadays his association has more than 70 branches in the U.S. and has
gained representation in almost every U.S. state. It has also expanded
to 15 countries around the world.
